It all began
It all began in 1939 with Dutch migrants; Cees and Johanna Tesselaar leaving Holland on their wedding day with a suitcase full of bulbs. Setting up shop in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges they began growing tulips, an exotic bloom for the time which caused a stir with people jumping fences to get a closer look. The gates were opened in 1954 and the festival was born. From simple beginnings to what is now one of Victoria’s major tourist attractions, the success of The Tesselaar Tulip Festival rests entirely with the unique and timeless beauty of the tulip. There is nothing more captivating than a field of colourful tulips. The family business is now managed by Cees and Johanna’s grandson, Paul Tesselaar.
Sculpture amongst the tulips
In conjunction with the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, the festival is home to Victoria’s fifth richest sculpture prize, where renowned sculptors from across Australia exhibit their works among the colourful tulips.
